How to draw panda with pastel crayons and how to paint panda with gouache, two master-classes

With the appearance resembling a fluffy teddy bear, a panda is a favorite character so popular among people. Its famous black and white color, kind nature and herbivorous way of nutrition (panda eats bamboo plant) made this bear one of the most popular animals. In this article I’ll teach you how to draw panda. I think it will be very interesting and amusing for you. From the very beginning I should warn you that the first lesson is more difficult than the second one, so if you are not quite sure in your drawing skills or at the moment you do not dispose of the necessary materials I advise you to choose the second lesson.

Steps

Let’s get ready the necessary materials. These are pastel crayons, special pastel paper or a sheet of cardboard. I want to draw your attention to the cardboard. Do not use the smooth cardboard because the crayon colourants will not hold on the sheet and the whole work will turn into a failure. The surface of the cardboard should be rough, this is a type of cardboard that is often used for covers of thick notebooks. Usually it is not white but has a beige or grey color. Let’s start from the simple sketch. If you make the sketch in pencil (just like me, I find this way easier), do not use a soft pencil and do not press on the pencil too much when you are drawing because it will be very difficult to erase it in case the wrong line without damaging the pastel paper. Now we start with the head and arm of the bear.

We have already decided what materials are more suitable, and we even have started drawing the sketch. After head and one arm appeared on the paper we draw out the panda’s muzzle. Draw the jaw and eyes. Its eyes are very similar to the toy eyes of the teddy bear. Do not forget about ears, we draw them at this step too. Let’s return to the arm we have previously drawn, add the miniature claws. Since our bear is black and white I decided to circle the shaded area of eyes.

Keep on working over the muzzle of your cute panda. Draw out the jaw area, show the fur covering the muzzle. Draw the nose in the shape of the stretched and upturned triangle. Now we go back to the eyes and show the blinks inside. Blinks appear when the light is reflected in the eyes. These are small white spots of light in the eye. Now draw panda’s body. Let’s sketch it in the shape of potato, it will look funny.

After the body is drawn it is time to get back to arms and feet. Add another arm and a foot in front. Do not worry if the supportive lines are visible. Later we are going to erase them gently.

Our panda has a very amusing and funny position – it is resting on the tree. So we shall draw the branches of the tree where our bamboo bear is lying. You shall not draw out thoroughly each small twig spreading aside from the major branches. You can see that I refused from it, I prefer to draw them at the very end of my work with a pastel crayon.

Well, we have already drawn the panda and the main branches of the tree where panda is lying. Look at your sketch one more time and make sure that for now you are satisfied with the first result. Now take the eraser and erase very gently the body auxiliary line crossing the hind leg. If the work with pastel crayons is new for you, you shall better choose simple pictures to earn more practice.

Now let’s speak a bit more of the pastel crayons and pencils. The pastel crayons are sold as a set or you can find separate crayons of single color. I always feel the shortage of white, green and blue colors so I have to buy them separately in addition to the set of crayons I have. I advise to everyone who wishes to draw with pastel crayons to buy some extra white crayons separately because they are used most of all. It is better to buy the pastel set of twenty four colors. I can assure you the variety of colors will always be helpful for you. If you are going to use the pastel pencils, it is also a very good variant. You can sharpen them as usual ones. The work with pastel crayons is not difficult at all, but their main disadvantage for me is the dirty hands. But there is no other way to work with them. I do advise you to have some wet piece of cloth by your side. You will use it in case you need to wipe your fingers from the pastel dust and to save your doors or other things you touch from pastel fingerprints.

As you can guess it is the time to start drawing our panda with pastel crayons. At first we apply the basic colors for the bear. These are mainly white and some secondary shade of brick-red color. We start with the white color. Take the white crayon and gently, without much pressure, paint the white parts of the bear (head and body). You may not care of direction you apply the shading.

When you are finished with the white color, take the brick-red crayon and add some shade at certain spots as it is shown in the picture. Do not apply this color too much if you do not wish to have a reddish-black bear. You just need to pay special attention to the part of the body lying in the shade, it is the back in our case – so here you can apply the brick-red color without hesitation. For sure, if this technique is new for you, you wonder if it looks beautiful. Maybe the way it looks now is not quite satisfying but do not hurry up and wait for further striking effects. You will admire the final result.

Now we need to rub smoothly the pastel layer we have previously applied at our drawing. We are going to do it with the finger. I do not use any wadded pads, they are not good for this purpose. The best tool at the moment is your own finger. When you have rubbed the colors, take the pastel crayon of the black color and shade the arms, leg and ears of the bear.

Now you shall do the same to the black color as you already did to the white and brick-red colors. Rub it smoothly with your finger. Now you have some black color remained on your finger, keep on working with the same finger and separate the jaw area from the head. Just outline it accurately with your finger. Take the brown color and draw the eyes. The work over panda is not finished yet, though we can already see the vivid image of the bear.

After we finished the eyes in brown, take the black color again and surround the eyes with the black ring. You may use the white or grey color to put the blink dots inside the eyes. Take the white color again and try to show the direction of the fur growing on the bear muzzle. Just make certain areas lighter (area of cheeks and nose). The tree is shaded with the pastel crayon of the brown color. For now paint just main branches, the minor twigs are still waiting for attention. Take the turquoise color and chaotically paint the background (the turquoise will be the dominating color). I also advise you to add some shades (just slightly) in pale blue and white to the turquoise background. The mixture of colors will look very beautiful.

If you wish you may frame the drawing with the green color. Now we rub with your finger all the colors of the pastel crayons you have previously applied. Just do not blur the brown color of tree together with the background. The brown color applied at the tree brunches is rubbed accurately within the borders in the direction of growth. It is better to start with the background and then to rub the tree because it is darker. After polishing the tree, take the black crayon and apply it with locally at the branches showing the shade, you can see it on the picture.

I want to tell you a bit more of the pastel fixing sprays. You can either use the specialized spray for fixing the pastel drawings or you can substitute it with the hair spray for fixation. Just simple cheap hair spray without any sparkles will do for this purpose. Pastel drawing may be fixed or not. You can refuse from fixing it with spray but in this case you shall be very gently in handling with your work. It would be better to place it in the frame under the glass right away to avoid spoiling the drawing. Many artists prefer the latter: right after they finished drawing they put the work under the glass without fixation. They prefer this variant because the pastel colors slightly change after the spray is applied; they turn brighter and lose their soft velvet effect. While applying the spray do not hold it too close to the picture or you may spoil the image with the spot of spray. It would be even better if you test the spray on some additional piece of paper where you have previously painted and rubbed the pastel crayon. This way you will learn the better way to apply the spray out of your own experience. Do not get scared by the evident change of the picture. When the spray is dry the drawing will be back to its original view. After the spray is dry you can apply other colors above the spray as usually, just do not forget to fix a new layer of crayon. And now we draw minor twigs in addition to what is already drawn. There is a simple rule about applying the fixing spray: you shall finish your drawing with the spray right after you applied necessary colors, mixed them by rubbing, and if you are sure the drawn piece of image has the desirable view – fix it! Thus you fix the picture for a couple of times at certain steps of your work, even if it is yet not the final of the whole picture. We had no necessity in fixation at previous steps because we almost did not mix the colors. But not it is time to fix what is already drawn. You shall keep in your mind that overuse of fixing spray is not a good thing at all because this way your work will absolutely lose its velvet effect. Do not hope that the fixed crayons will not leave any trace on the hands. It will make you less dirty for sure but you will still need to be accurate in treating your work. When your picture is dry you can view and admire the result. The work is done, you can put it in the frame.

Now we will paint an easier variant. It will be bright and colorful – the kids will like this painting so you shall engage them in the process. At first we start with the sketch. On the thick sheet of paper we draw a head, part of it arm and the line marking the back. I remind you not to press on the pencil too hard because later we will erase some unnecessary lines.

After the bear head is drawn we add two ears and draw the muzzle. Now we go lower to the arm and pay more attention to it. We just preliminary mark the darker parts of bear fur.

Continue work over the muzzle and add missing parts. Draw the nose. Do not forget about the hind leg of the bear. Correct some lines if it is necessary.

  • How to draw panda with pastel crayons and how to paint panda with gouache, two master-classes

We draw the tree trunk lying on the ground and the second arm of the bear holding the trunk. There is no need in paying too much attention to the tree branches now, we will do it later already in colors. Let’s show the fur texture on the hind leg.

  • How to draw panda with pastel crayons and how to paint panda with gouache, two master-classes

It is time to paint with gouache. Take the thick brush. On the palette water the blue color until it is very pale. Paint the sky with this faded color. Wait a little while it is getting dry and go to the next step. Take the light green color and water it slightly. This color is used for grass. Paint the grass area.

  • How to draw panda with pastel crayons and how to paint panda with gouache, two master-classes

The grass background is done, and while it is getting dry we pay attention to panda. Take the brown color and paint parts of panda’s body which are supposed to be dark. Do not worry that now they are brown, later we will make them black, but we need this brown color as a basement. Having the brush still in brown gouache we paint the tree. Then we take the thin brush and paint grass blades (see the bottom left corner of the painting). Since the grass background is light green, we take the dark green color and paint the blades.

  • How to draw panda with pastel crayons and how to paint panda with gouache, two master-classes

The blades should not be lined up in a raw, just paint them as vertical lines without caring of the direction, chaotically. At the same step you can see I have started to paint out the tree bark. You see that we need the same brown color we have used for the tree, but with the help of the thin brush we will show the bark texture. Let’s go back to our bear. The white parts of the body should be also painted with the color. We take the pale blue color watered until it is very faded and paint the white fur.

  • How to draw panda with pastel crayons and how to paint panda with gouache, two master-classes

We complete the work over the bark of the tree that our panda is holding. We shall paint the trees on the horizon. At the distance they seem to be bluish, so we take the blue color and paint them using the dot technique (with short dotted dabs). Now we wait until the trees on the horizon get dry. Now take the black color and paint the dark parts of the bear’s fur. If you look at the image very attentively you can notice that the brown color was not a waste of time and effort, it is visible under black and it looks good.

  • How to draw panda with pastel crayons and how to paint panda with gouache, two master-classes

Complete the work over the grass in front. When you have painted the black parts of panda’s body, you shall show the fur texture. Fist wait until the black fur is fully dry, then take the thin brush and paint out the separate strands of fur on the black area.

  • How to draw panda with pastel crayons and how to paint panda with gouache, two master-classes

Now we work with the grass at the horizon line. We take the blue and green colors and mix them on the palette. With the mixed color we paint that area. Complete the eyes. Take the thinnest brush you have and paint the eyes but do not forget to leave the white spots – blinks in the eyes. This way the eyes will seem vivid.

  • How to draw panda with pastel crayons and how to paint panda with gouache, two master-classes

Now we are going to finish the work in general, just look at it attentively and notice if you have forgotten something. I have previously mentioned of the tree branches, I said we would paint them at the final step. It is time to do it. Take the thin brush and the brown color. Paint the branches. That’s all, our work is done. I hope you are satisfied with the result!

Warnings

  • Do not use the hair spray with sparkles as the fixing spray.
  • Before applying the fixing spray for pastel crayons tests it first at some separate piece of paper just be sure you do it the right way.
  • When you do the second task you shall be accurate and patient to wait until the color is dry at certain steps of your work.
