On the last day of May all American people commemorate the soldiers who have ever died wars for their homeland. This national holiday is called the Memorial Day. On this day people give their respect and express the sincere sorrow to those heroes who will always be a part of the history and a part of the past that is never forgotten. In this article I want to touch the military subject and as a symbol of all wars and brave hearts I chose a tank. I am sure that boys both big and small would enjoy the process of drawing the tank, especially when you know the keys to make a beautiful image of this heave military equipment. There are two tasks in this article: the first one will be made in pencil as a drawing, and the second one will be implemented in colors as a poster. It is up to you to choose your favorite way of artistic expression. The tank in pencil is the American improved model M1A2. It has this modification since 1994 though its initial variant of M1 was produced since 1980. The second task will be done in water colors or in gouache but even though I consider this one to be easier than the task to draw the tank in pencil. The second tank is not the M1A2 model but some prototype without the peculiar reference to the model.

You´ll need

  • Ordinary pencil
  • Eraser
  • Whatman paper
  • Water-colors or gouache
  • Palette
  • Brushes of different sizes

  • How to draw a tank in pencil and paint it in colors

Let’s start our sketch with a help of geometrical figures. Draw some kind of flattened cube that will be a turret of the tank. The turret is the part of tank that is on the top of the body, it can revolve on its axis. Mark the point of the tank gun coming out of the turret. Please try to apply little pressure to the pencil so that lines would be transparent and easy to erase when we will delete unnecessary lines.

Now we draw the tank body. At first we outline with vertical lines its back, front and side faces. The tank body of particularly this model is narrow and as flattened as its turret.

This strange-looking curvy cross-hatching is the way we shade the background trees showed in zoom. I intentionally show you its zoom version that may look a little offhand but still it makes the trees look real. Do not smash your hatching with fingers or wadded pad. It will worsen the result.

Now you see clear how to make cross-hatching of the tank body. Look at the horizon tree line – this is the result of the hatching method I showed you above. You can do it with the soft pencil. Mark the shade cast by the tank, later we will cross-hatch it.

The closer tree should be lighter than the ones on the horizon. Hatch the tank shade and step by step complete the work over the body. Pay attention that the right side should be cross-hatched slightly with less pressure than the left side. Make the horizon line darker.

As a basic color for the tank we take the dark green and water it until it is faded on the palette. Paint the tank. Later we will shade it at certain spots. Let’s paint the grass as a background before painting out the details. You need to take the light green color already faded on the palette, take this color with the thick brush shading the spots where grass should grow. Again we wait until it is dry.

Now paint the trees on the horizon. For this purpose we mix blue and dark green colors on the palette. Using the mixed color we paint the trees by short dots without wide dabs. The same way continue with the grass on the horizon but without many details. The trees should be darker than the grass.

The grass in front would look more natural if your accent it with some dabs in faded blue color. That was the final step of our work over the tank. The painting is done.

Warnings

  • The first work is more difficult because it demands diligence in detailing the image of the tank.
  • The second work demands tidiness, accuracy and patience when waiting until the picture is dry. Do not hurry with the next steps because it is possible to spoil the work.
