Get ready the paper for your painting, if you have not found the thick sheets of the necessary size you can buy a whatman paper and cut it into the sheets of appropriate size. Let’s start sketching: simple geometric figures will help us in this process. We will try to form a man in a sitting position out of figures. Later we will erase all these auxiliary geometric figures so do not press on the pencil. The head has the shape of the circle and the chest is sketched as a cube.

We continue our work over the sketch and the next step is adding other body parts. The joins of the extremities and the neck are sketched as smaller circles showing the place where the leg or hand is bent. The hips are marked as a cube smaller than the one of the chest.

Well, we have drawn joint circles marking the preliminary position of legs and arms. Draw the book in grandfather’s hands. Now we shall draw the face lines for the next steps when we will draw the eyes, nose and mouth inside these lines. We are drawing the chair the grandfather will sit on as a cube.

Now with a help of the lines we have previously drawn we shall draw out the face details such as a nose, mouth and eyes. Do not forget to draw eyebrows, usually grandfathers have broad and thick eyebrows. The important details are mustaches and beard. Also you shall mark the spot for an ear, its visible part will be drawn at the next step. Let’s start drawing the body basing on the circles and cubes we have previously sketched, do not forget about the details of clothes, for example about the collar.

The face is done in pencil, but we need to continue with the body parts. We have already drawn arms and now we are going to add the hands. It will be easier if you first draw the hands as if they are in the mittens, then you divide the mittens into fingers. Draw the legs, in my variant the legs are worn in trousers.

When you draw the feet do not forget about the home shoes on. Draw the armchair where the grandfather is sitting. Well, the general pencil drawing of the grandfather is done. I decided to add the source of light to my picture and drew the window, it has the shape of square.

I hope you remember a very simple rule of drawing that was mentioned it the beginning of my instructions – do not press on the pencil too hard. Now take the eraser and erase the auxiliary lines. This is how the picture looks like now.

Let’s start painting in colors. Take the gouache but if you do not have it you can paint with water colors. But I shall mention that this work does not involve the usual technique of dealing with water colors, because the idea of this picture does not presuppose it to be transparent. Make the pale brown color by watering the brown color on the palette. Paint the background (walls) with this color. The floor is painted in dark brown. Wait until the colors are dry.

Now when the background is dry we paint the body. The body color is easily made by mixing the red color with much water. First try it on some additional piece of paper to be sure you have got the right shade. Then paint the body parts. Take the same color but pure as it is and paint the chair.

Let’s make the shade on the chair to show its dimensions. Take the pure red color and apply along the chairs sides as it is shown on the picture. Look at the chair attentively and you will notice some darker places and some lighter ones, the right side of the chair is darker. We continue painting the senior man but first make sure that the body parts are already dry. Now we paint the clothes, I decided to make the sweater in blue and the trousers in black. With the medium brush paint the window glass, use the watered blue color for it. While painting the dabs of your brush should be chaotic to show the glass stains. And we again wait until the painting is dry.

Again we take the blue color to mark the shade on the grandfather’s clothes. When the shade is done we start working over contours which will make the image brighter. The colors of all the contours should be the same as the colors of this or that detail. One exception is body parts. We will not use red or pink color to outline the parts of the body, it will make the whole body look too red. Take the brown color for this purpose and you will avoid this problem. All the contours are done with the thin brush.

Let’s return to the window. Take the blue color with the brush and make the brighter chaotic dabs. Paint the contour of the window sill in blue. Since the grandfather has the grey hair we will paint his grey hair and beard with the help of contour. For this purpose we water the blue color into very pale blue and use it for hair contour showing the hair growth, but not too much if you do not want to make the blue hair and beard.

Keep on working over the contours thoroughly. We need to show the folds on the clothes, let’s start with the sweater, use the same color. Paint the shade under the window sill, for this purpose take the pale brown color.

Now we paint the shadow of the chair with the brown color. Show the shadow from the right side. I decided to strengthen the folds of the chair with the brown color, too. The brown color will show the deeper folds, if you wish to make your folds not so deep, take the red color. Continue making the contours.

The beard and hair look too brightly white, but if you paint there some pale brown shade they will look more natural. If the chair folds are dry outline the chair itself with the contour. Another point is the wall, if you think it needs shading you can do it at some places. That’s all, our painting is ready and you can make a present to your grandfather.

Warnings

  • Do not use office paper for painting, it is not good at all when you work with colors. It would be better to buy the whatman paper.
  • If you paint not by yourself but with the children you shall be attentive to the process of their work.
