How to cook exotic sandwiches with cockroaches
Shish-kebab from grasshoppers, salad with beetles’ grubs, fried scorpions and locusts, fried eggs with cockroaches – all these common dishes for Thai cuisine we relate to kind of exotic one, and there will be very few people that wish to try them. But properly cooked insects aren’t inferior to traditional kinds of meat in their taste and nutritional value. Besides, scientists start prognosing more often that in the near future mankind is going to turn to products made of insects. People who have just started using insects for food are usually advised to disguise them so that fastidiousness and disgust won’t appear. As an option you may cook pates from insects, or make sandwiches with them.
- Larvae of cockroaches
- Toast bread
We will cook closed sandwiches – those which will hide the filling safely. For that we need a slice of toast bread, which we cut cater-corner so to get two triangles. To cook it in a sandwich maker it is advisable to choose just toast bread, usual one is not right for that. Of course you can prepare sandwiches of an usual bread, but they won’t be so pretty and tasty like from the toast one.
We peel avocado, slice it into thin pieces.
For cooking of sandwiches take Florida woods cockroaches larvae – they are quite large (2 inches or 4-5 cm) and not too hard. Adult cockroaches with spiny legs and big wings aren’t suitable for making sandwiches. We take larvae into a freezer for 10-15 minutes in advance; this is the most humane way of killing insects.
Next we cut off their most hard parts – head and legs. We wash prepared “trunks” of cockroaches in such a way, dry them out with absorbent paper towels.
Start building a sandwich – we lay out cheese on slice of toast, cockroaches’ larvae upon it and above we cover them with a piece of avocado.
Cover everything with one more slice of toast and take them to bake into electric sandwich maker.
Few minutes later the toast is browned, sandwiches are ready.
The taste of cheese and avocado as well as their consistence after thermal treatment (the cheese melts, avocado becomes a liquid paste) safely hides the cockroach inside the sandwich. If no-one knows what filling sandwiches have, no one is likely to guess what are they made of.
- You’d better use cockroaches of home breeding (almost all countries already has breeding farms of eatable insects).
- To cook sandwiches you may use only insects with soft chitinous integument.
