How to make a Christmas toy from common cone

When you want to go and buy something new, quite often prices can stop you. It’s not necessary to buy Christmas toys, instead you can make them yourself. As we all wish so much that our Christmas tree will be the most beautiful and unique. I offer cones for your attention. No, you heard everything right, really simple pine cones. The most important point – it’s not expensive. You merely need to go to a forest or park and collect them. And after you have collected the cones you can make unique toys from them. The cones turn out to be so pretty that your guests will be charmed by them and will want to have such a little toy. As it is not only cheap, but also curious. So let’s start making our small Christmas miracle :)

  • Panel glossy lacquer
  • Indoor paint for walls and ceilings
  • Universal “Rapid Fix” polymer adhesive
  • Elmer’s glue
  • pinecone
  • gouache
  • brush
  • nail polishes

At first you should clean the cone from dirtying. For that you take wooden stick and clean it from small leaves and other rubbish. Then take cone and carefully shake it upside down (so that everything excess spilled out). We take the brush and finish cleaning, wipe the dust (the size of the brush is not important, but of course it shouldn’t be huge, advise you to have lush one).

Take indoor paint for walls and ceilings and apply one coat of paint. Completely paint our cone; you should take a long brush number 5. It is better to use the brush with natural bristle. In that case you will be able to use this brush very long time, and besides, it doesn’t fade. Thus, you have painted it once and have left to dry for about 30-40 minutes.

While our cone dries, we can make paint for it. I decided that I want to make it in golden. For that we need to merge gouaches of light-beige and brown (add it a little bit) colors and add white. Stir it up and add Elmer’s glue, once again stir. You should add as much glue as you have paint that is 50/50. Here is the color I got.

The time has come that we have it completely dried. Remember, you should leave it to dry fully, so that afterwards paint and gouache mixture won’t be mixed up.

When being colored the cone starts to close. There is nothing to be afraid of here, you simply have to wait for it to dry fully and put small sheets of paper among cones’ flakes. Consequently, our cone will open, but not too much. You should hold little sheets of paper for 20 minutes so that it could fix the position which it should have.

We cover the cone with panel glossy lacquer. It will close up again, but now you wait for its complete dry state. And next, having no fear, make even every leave with fingers. But it still should be done carefully.

Start to add decorations onto our cone. At first I attached the largest and the main. I attached them with super glue, filling it a bit under a bead.

Then we add fine details. And here it is finally, our ready-made cone. Big and small beads were attached with super glue, and glass beads we were sticking the following way: I dropped universal polymer adhesive on a leave and spread it with a little stick, after that strewed glass beads on this place. There I made a couple of strokes with nail polishes and added a little bit of spangles onto leaves. I attached a small golden thread. You should tie it to the top, so you could conveniently hang it onto a Christmas tree. And here is our cone-toy.

Warnings

  • You can use only one brush for painting of our cone. Just wash it after each time or soak in a jar, and you should wipe it dry before every coloring.
  • Universal “Rapid Fix” polymer adhesive, panel glossy lacquer, indoor paint for walls and ceilings – all these can be bought in a tool shop.
  • It’s better to buy panel glossy lacquer with no smell.

  • Cover the table with a rubber sheet or any other material as it’s very difficult to wash everything off.
