Roses can hardly stand temperature changes. If you have brought roses and it is cold outdoors, don’t take them to the warm room right away. To ease the stress let the flowers stay in a chill entrance hall or a balcony.
Before you put the flowers into the vase, you should prepare the stems. For that you should cut all the leaves that are down and can get into the water. Then cut the stems aslant with a sharp knife or a garden pruner. It is made in order to refresh the cutting and to enlarge the surface of water absorption. You can split a little the end of the stems. Theoretically it is better to do the cut right in the water so that the air may not penetrate the stem, but practically it is hard to perform. Right after cutting the stems try to put them into the water as fast as possible.
Now you can put the bunch into the vase. Remember that it is better not to put roses with other flowers. Experts recommend pouring settled water of room temperature where you can put several ice cubes. It is not recommended to pour cold water into the vase because it causes shock to the flowers. You may add some ice each time when you refill the vase. Moreover, the life of the flowers can be prolonged by a pill of aspirin, several particles of citric acid, and a piece of sugar also a pill of absorption carbon or a silver coin put into the water.
The vase with flowers should stay far from the sources of heat or a draft. As mentioned before, temperature fluctuations are also undesirable. As far as possible you should wet the flowers twice a day with a spray.
It is sufficient to refill the vase once a day in the morning. Take the flowers to a cold place for the night or put them into a bath with water of room temperature. After such procedure you should remove the leaves that started to get spoilt. Then it is necessary to cut the stems and put the roses into a clean vase with fresh water.
Something else can also be of help. You will need a spray for houseplants and a big plastic bag. At first you should thoroughly wet roses and the space around them using the spray.
Then carefully scoop the flowers and put the bag on. It looks like this. I usually leave roses like this for a couple of hours. After such procedure the flowers come to life. I should say that this is all I know about how to keep flowers alive longer.
- All the recommendations are really hard to fulfill. It takes much time and effort. You don’t have to follow all of them. Choose ones that you can do. Keep in mind that sometimes small efforts can bring wonderful results.
