How to make an animal feed for giant African snails (Helix pomatia)
Everyone who has tried to raise giant African snails at home knows how important a healthy diet for baby snails is. The speed with which snails will grow and how firm and beautiful their shell will be depends exactly on the quality of the feed and presence of calcium. You can make the process of snails feeding considerably simpler by making animal feed that consists of milled cereals, eggshell and additional calcium supplements. Such animal feed supplies growing snails with necessary nutrients, makes for rapid growth and balanced development.
- Grain mixture (flax seeds, red, white, yellow millet, wheat, barley, oat etc.) – 80%
- Wheat bran – 5%
- Eggshell – 3%
- Tricalcium phosphate – 2%
- Fish food – 5%
- Gammarus – 5%
Grain mixture will build the basis of animal feed. You should sort out high-quality grain, the more varied, the better the mixture is. Both chicken and quail eggshells can be used here. The main thing is to wash it and to dry well.
We mill grain mixture in a coffee-grinder, add tricalcium phosphate as an extra source of calcium. Just a sufficient amount of calcium in animal feed allows growing large snails quickly.
Additional sources of proteins and nutrients, needed for intensive snails growth are – fish food and Gammarus. We also mill them in the coffee-grinder.
We stir milled grain mixture thoroughly with protein supplements.
If animal feed is planned for feeding of baby snails, we make it almost powdery. For bigger snails you may prepare feed with large particles.
But even when you feed snails with such animal feed in terrarium they must have sources of calcium (skeleton of a cuttlefish) and plant food for free access.
Snails willingly eat such animal feed; grow on it very quickly and evenly.
- The animal feed may be used for feeding of adult snails – it helps to restore power after egg mass, and also diversify poor vegetable diet in winter.
