How to make a Love Tree card for the St. Valentine’s Day

The St. Valentine’s Day is coming; it is the time when you get puzzled over the search for a romantic and nice present for your best second half. You are questioning yourself what to give, how to make it special and where it is better to give the present, but there is no doubt that the best option for such a special day is the greeting card! It is true, neither a star from the sky nor a pearl from the ocean bottom, but only a simple beautiful card made with your own hands and the spirit of your soul will make your beloved person happy! Isn’t it the best way to tell about your feelings (even to make the first declaration of love) to your dear person? Of course now there are a thousand and one variants of a hand-made Valentine’s card but I offer something very special for a special person. The main idea of the card will be the tree because it symbolized your love – with deep and strong roots, lasting basis and wonderful fruits. But the fruits of our tree will be not apples or pears, but hearts (what can be more symbolic?!) – bright, beautiful, filled with love and something special. I am sure that your close person will be deeply touched by the small cute paper rolls attached to the tree. What messages to write in the rolls is your personal choice. These can be the reasons of your strong love or the best qualities of your beloved person you love him or her for. I am sure that any person will be curious to know why he or she deserved such a warmth and trembling attention. So let’s bring joy to our beloved people with such an easy but tender and touching present!

You´ll need

  • Two A4 sheets of thick paper or white cardboard
  • А4 sheet of pink colored paper
  • Ordinary pencil
  • Eraser
  • Black soft-tip pen
  • Black painting color (gouache)
  • Waxed cord
  • Red painting color (gouache)
  • White sheet of paper
  • Wadded pads
  • Glue
  • Scissors
  • Romantic mood and a drop of fantasy

Steps

We begin with the A4 sheet of paper, but it is optional, you may go on with a bigger scale and make a card on the Whatman paper. The paper must be thick to fit strong male’s hands well, it will be no good if the card will sadly hang as a piece of cloth. I took a thick sheet of water-color paper, but a simple white A4 cardboard will be good for our purpose too. Make everything ready and put aside.

Now we choose a colored base for our card. You may choose any color, everything depends on your fantasy and the means you dispose. In my case I found a sheet of bright pink colored paper. Red, yellow or even violet colors will do. Don’t get upset if you don’t have a colored paper, the color pencils or painting colors will help you!

Since the sheet of colored paper has the same size with the white base we need to cut the colored one from edges. As it is shown on the picture, at first I folded about 0.5 inches (1.5 cm) along one edge and did the same along another one. Once again I remind you that it depends on you what size of the inner sheet of paper you wish to make, it may be smaller or bigger, or maybe even round-shaped!

Now arm yourself with the glue! With accurate moves drop small glue dots along the perimeter of the colored sheet, then we just spread the glue with the brush or in a barbaric way with a finger. I felt like I wanted to try the latter option.

We place the colored sheet with the glue frame in the middle of the sheet of white cardboard. Press the sheets together carefully trying to get rid of any single surface imperfection. To be sure the work is done properly, get the sheet base pressed under a heavy stack of books for while.

Our task now is to draw a tree. For this purpose we slightly mark with a pencil a small horizontal line in the middle of the sheet, from this mark we make another vertical line until the bottom of the pink sheet (who is not sure in the drawing skills may use a ruler to make the straight lines). This is the base for a tree trunk.

Now the task is a little more difficult. With soft fine lines we draw the trunk from the left and right sides of the vertical line. Don’t press on the pencil too much and don’t worry if the lines appeared not straight. Where have you seen the tree with a perfectly straight trunk?

And now we set our inner artist free and draw main branches of our tree. Don’t make them too thick, but too thin will not look nice either. I intentionally stretched main branches beyond the pink sheet borders because the true love also doesn’t know boundaries.

When the main branches are ready, add some aside twigs. It appears beautiful if you will make the end of the branch or twig thinner and narrow. Smaller twigs are within the boundaries, I decided they should know their right place.

When the sketch of the tree is ready, take the black soft-tip pen and outline the outer lines of the tree. Pay attention that in the result you get one continuous black line as you can see on the picture. Follow the outer border line, do not paint black all the lines you drew.

Now we delicately erase the traces of the pencil. It is important to wait for a while until the soft-tip pen line is dry to prevent smearing it with eraser. I will open a small secret that the eraser wastes are better to blow away than to whisk them off with your palm. Then the chance to spoil the background with dark shades is less.

When the tree base is ready, prepare the watercolor or gouache. I took the gouache because it is the easiest type of paint to use and the color is very deep. You may use a watercolor but the brightness will be definitely faded. If you can trust your soft-tip pen to do this job, you may paint the inner space of tree with it. Of course the black color is not the restriction, you may perfectly use brown or blue color, or any dark tint. We take the brush and softly paint the space of trunk and branches with a thick layer of color (more color, less water). Then we put aside the card to let it get dry away from children or domestic animals.

We will need nine hearts to make our tree “fruitful”. Even the most skilful artist will not be able to draw nine exactly the same molds. For this purpose we do a trick: we draw the most beautiful heart on the cardboard or on the thick paper and cut it out. We get the pattern and use it for coping other nine hearts.

  • How to make a Love Tree card for the St. Valentine’s Day

The hearts must also be thick enough, that is why we use the same material as for the white base. In my variant it is a thick watercolor paper. We place the pattern on the sheet and outline it ten times. You may ask why ten? Because the practice proves the first try is always a waste, one heart may appear damaged. This way we are ready to substitute one in case. Pay attention that the space around the heart should be about 0.3 inch (1 cm).

Now we are going to use the space we left at the previous step. With a pencil in your hand draw a lacy fringe around the hearts. Apply your fantasy in this process. The fringe may not be rounded, but with sharpened tips. You may draw body of flame around the heart, or even leave the hearts as they are without any decoration. Don’t follow an aim to make exactly the same pattern ten times, let each your heart will be unique.

Get the red color ready. Please don’t forget, that you may choose any color. The choice of the color depends on your wish and the means you dispose. Clean your brush thoroughly from the black color, or it is even better to take another one. Paint the inside area of the hearts in exactly the same way – more color, less water.

  • How to make a Love Tree card for the St. Valentine’s Day

And here is another small trick. To be honest, not all the hearts have perfect contour because the brush is far not the most reliable instrument in your hands. I will open you a small secret – it is easy to fix with the soft-tip pen. Let’s outline the inner contour of the heart with the black soft-tip pen. We get the smooth and nice contour.

Let’s add a little more contrast. Using the same savior of broken borders, black soft-tip pen, we outline the lacy edge, too.

  • How to make a Love Tree card for the St. Valentine’s Day

With a help of narrow sharp scissors we carefully cut out our lacy hearts.

Now we start making little notes. It was so useful to find a ruler with ready-made molds, rectangle in particular. But if you are not as lucky in such findings as I was, you may use the trick #1 and make the pattern the same way as we did for a heart. The approximate size of the bundles is 0.8 x 2.0 inches (2 x 5 cm) but you may make the rolls even tinier, or maybe even bigger, it depends on the length of the text written inside. On the thin sheet of paper we draw 10 boxes (don’t forget, one may be spoilt).

  • How to make a Love Tree card for the St. Valentine’s Day

Cut 10 rectangles out. In this case it is important to use thinner paper to roll it easier. By the way, the color as always may vary.

  • How to make a Love Tree card for the St. Valentine’s Day

Now, on nine notes write the messages you wish. I wrote nine things I love in my second half most of all. But there may be other variants: nine wishes to be realized; nine reasons why you love this person; nine unforgettable events you shared together; nine places you wish to visit together in future… The list may be endless, here the fantasy is your main helper. To make a nice roll, at first fold the sheet of paper by halves. Use your extra tenth sheet to practice.

  • How to make a Love Tree card for the St. Valentine’s Day

Then from each edge roll the side up to the middle.

  • How to make a Love Tree card for the St. Valentine’s Day

The same way we roll nine similar rolls.

  • How to make a Love Tree card for the St. Valentine’s Day

Let’s go back to our hearts. To attach the rolls to the hearts you have to make two tiny holes for the waxed cord. You may use manicure scissors or a compass leg to pierce the paper neatly from the face. Practice on the tenth heart if it is still available.

  • How to make a Love Tree card for the St. Valentine’s Day

Now we take the waxed cord. As a matter of fact you may use any other material, for example the satin ribbons or woolen threads. But the waxed cord has the advantage to be thick and narrow enough to be fixed properly and to fit inside the holes easily. In addition there is no need to sear its tips as a satin ribbon demands. I took the brown waxed cord but you may choose any color up to your wish.

  • How to make a Love Tree card for the St. Valentine’s Day

Cut nine equal pieces of cord, about 3 inches (7 cm) in length, but it depends on the size of the rolls.

  • How to make a Love Tree card for the St. Valentine’s Day

Put a piece of cord through one hole from the face, and then put the cord through the second hole from outside. You must get the result as it is shown on the picture.

  • How to make a Love Tree card for the St. Valentine’s Day

Now we place the roll between two ends of cord and carefully tie the cord without pressing the roll too much. Make two knots on the cord to be sure the roll is attached to the heart tightly.

  • How to make a Love Tree card for the St. Valentine’s Day

Now when the experimental heart is done successfully, start to do the same process with others. Make two holes in each heart the same way you did it on your first experimental heart.

  • How to make a Love Tree card for the St. Valentine’s Day

Put the cords through as they are meant to be.

  • How to make a Love Tree card for the St. Valentine’s Day

Tie all nine rolls to nine hearts. The fruits of our tree are finally ripe!

  • How to make a Love Tree card for the St. Valentine’s Day

But let’s get back to the base. The tree should not stand alone, isn’t it? Using a pencil draw some wavy lines of stalks, as it is shown on the picture. Their height and number depend on you, I made seven stalks.

  • How to make a Love Tree card for the St. Valentine’s Day

Now outline the stalks with the black soft-tip pen. You may use green, brown or any other dark color.

  • How to make a Love Tree card for the St. Valentine’s Day

The stalks look not very nice if they are bare, you may decorate them with the cute curls as you wish.

  • How to make a Love Tree card for the St. Valentine’s Day

For a heart-bud I took the adhesive paper, I liked its glossy polish. But if you don’t have such paper, simple colored paper will do. By hand or using a pattern draw a small heart for each stalk. The hearts can be of various sizes, or you can even substitute hearts with colored circles or flowers.

  • How to make a Love Tree card for the St. Valentine’s Day

    Cut out your buds.

  • How to make a Love Tree card for the St. Valentine’s Day

Now easily glue the hearts to the stalks on your card. You may avoid appliqué work but simply paint the hearts with watercolor or soft-tip pens.

  • How to make a Love Tree card for the St. Valentine’s Day

Now we are going to need a wadded pad to attach the fruits to our tree creating a 3D effect.

  • How to make a Love Tree card for the St. Valentine’s Day

Cut a round wadded pad into four equal segments. You may not be very precise with the equality of these quarters because anyway they will not be visible.

  • How to make a Love Tree card for the St. Valentine’s Day

We will need nine segments matching the number of our hearts on the tree.

  • How to make a Love Tree card for the St. Valentine’s Day

Let’s spread the glue properly on one side of the wadded pad. Be sure that you apply enough glue to get the pad quarter soaked with it.

  • How to make a Love Tree card for the St. Valentine’s Day

Then attach the pad quarter to the heart in the way it is shown on the picture.

  • How to make a Love Tree card for the St. Valentine’s Day

Make all the fruits ready for the solemn reunion with the love tree.

  • How to make a Love Tree card for the St. Valentine’s Day

Now choose any heart and any location for it and stick to the tree, having covered the wadded pad with the glue one more time. As you see on the picture the hearts will be raised over the card surface as if they “hang” from the tree brunches.

  • How to make a Love Tree card for the St. Valentine’s Day

Stick all the hearts to their places. The Valentine’s card is ready!

Warnings

  • It is not obligatory to follow the same color spectrum that I used on my card.
  • Remember that your own details will make your present more unique.
  • It is not obligatory to attach hearts with a help of wadded pads, you may stick them only by glue or double-sided adhesive tape.
