How to make hair balsam with chitosan and apple cider vinegar
The chitosan is widely used in the production of hair cosmetics because of its moistening and antistatic characteristics. Moreover, chitosan makes the hair smooth and easy to comb. You can face some difficulties when transforming the chitosan powder into gel, but they can be solved if you add the apple cider vinegar that not only creates the acidic environment which is necessary for the chitosan solution, but it also cares for your hair making it smooth and shiny.
- Apple hydrosol – 2.26 oz (64 g)
- Apple cider vinegar – 0.46 oz (13 g)
- Prakaksi oil (Pentaclethramacroloba) – 0.26 oz (7 g)
- Coconut oil – 0.18 oz (5 g)
- BTMS emulsifier – 0.14 oz (4 g)
- Conditioning emulsifier – 0.11 oz (3 g)
- Chitosan – 0.07 oz (2 g)
- Lactic acid – 0.04 oz (1 g)
- Phenonip preservative – 0.02 oz (0.5 g)
- Apple cosmetic perfume – 0.02 oz (0.5 g)
In the majority of cases the chitosan is sold as a powder which is insoluble in the water. You need the acidic environment to get the gel.
Slightly moisten the chitosan powder with the hydrosol.
After that pour the apple cider vinegar and the lactic acid in it.
Mix it all up, you should get the homogenous gel clot.
Add a half volume (1.06 oz or 30 g) of the hydrosol, mix it all up until you get homogenous fluid gel.
Put the ready gel away for a while, you will need it at the final stage of the hair balsam preparation.
Weigh the coconut oil and the prakaksi oil – it is one of the most effective vegetable oils for the hair care.
Add the emulsifiers and put the bowl on a water bath.
Put the remains of hydrosol (1.2 oz or 34 g) on a water bath in a separate bowl. Do it simultaneously with the oils. When the emulsifier flakes melt in the oil completely, pour the oily phase into the heated hydrosol.
Mix it all with a mini mixer until you get a white homogenous emulsion.
When stirring, wait until the emulsion gets a bit colder, then add the chitosan gel.
Thoroughly mix it all up with a mini mixer again.
Add the preservative.
The chitosan has a specific unpleasant odor, that is why it is desirable to add some perfume or essential oil in order to get rid of it.
Pour the ready balm into the pre-disinfected jars with large necks. At first the balm is quite liquid, but it will become thicker with the time.
The balsam with chitosan and apple cider vinegar has a smooth and a bit gel consistence. It is perfectly spread over the hair and it is washed off well without making your hair heavier. The balsam should be spread over the washed hair for 3-5 minutes, after that it is washed off with warm tap water.
Your hair will become smoother and shiny, you won’t have any problems with combing it. One more advantage of the chitosan balsam is that it eliminates the hair electrification which is especially frequent in the winter season.
- The balsam should be spread over the whole length of your hair. Avoid its penetration on your scalp.
- As the chitosan is badly combined with the other components, you shouldn’t over charge the recipe with other extra ingredients.
