It is not always possible to play newest PC games on conventional computer, and many of you, I think, would like to combine computer for work with an opportunity to play at times, that’s why we will examine how to construct a budget variant of gaming PC, which you can easily use for work and that won’t be extreme and terribly expensive. In general ready-made gaming PC costs huge money and here is why. The mark-up of common ready-made computers usually takes 30-50% of the cost of hardware from which they are made up. Even 30% to my mind is very much, because you need only a couple of hours for assembly of computer. As for gaming computers, the sellers make profit from all their hearts, the mark-up there easily reaches 100% of the cost of hardware. So let’s assume you will buy all the hardware separately and construct it yourself, than it will cost you 1000$, and if you will go to a department store and buy a ready one, for the same configuration, the price may rise up to 2000$. And do you need that? Right, I thought just like that when I was building the computer myself. We won’t consider to investigate the advantages of these or that firms and models of hardware, we will limit ourselves only with the general explanations in the process of installation and construction.

    Any construction begins with the body, take it out of the box and take off the side cover. The body I have also chosen to be budget, light, but with all the connectors and joints capabilities of the most different equipment and coolers. Top-class bodies usually have an overpayment for the brand, design and thickness of the iron, the budget gaming PC doesn’t require this.

    Further we take the processor, take it out of the box, I have chosen Intel Core i5-3570 3.4GHz processor. I have consciously chosen exactly top-class of i5 line, because price of the top-class i7 is radically higher than of the top i5, but the increase in games isn’t dramatically higher at all, that is why in the budget version we can limit ourselves to such a processor.

    For any i5, if you aren’t going to speed it up cruelly, there is no need to use a special cooler, they don’t get warm much in comparison to i7, so the cooler which goes free with the processor will be more than enough, and here is one more point for saving money.

    Next goes random access memory or RAM, as you wish. Actually the memory frequency in a civil usage has almost nothing to do with the direct productivity in games; therefore I don’t recommend buying an extremely fast one, I took Kingston working on the frequency of 1600. Memory is very cheap now, so I recommend buying it more, some games are restrictive in this sense, at least you will always have a stock, and I took 16 GB.

There are chipsets, they are the same all over, and it’s enough to choose one of GeForce GTX 670 type, like I have chosen, and the manufacturers of various graphic cards put forward different costs for them, if you stay calm as for the brand, you can take a cheap Gigabyte. As for me, there is no sense to pay more, Asus, in my humble opinion, is no less good, well, there is a different construction of a card and we have no noticeable benefits from it. Maybe the frequency is 1% or thereabout higher, on practice it gives almost nothing, the increase of FPS in games is minimal, the chipset only matters, so I took the cheapest version on the 2 GB of GDDR5 RAM, the larger amount of RAM like 4GB, will give little effect, at least all modern games will have too much of 2 GB.

    And you shouldn’t save too much on your power supply, especially if you intend to increase the power of computer or build in the second video graphic card in SLI mode afterwards, to add one more hard disk drive and so on, all this will perceptibly increase the energy consumption, that’s why I have taken OCZ 750W power supply 80 plus bronze certificate with a stock. More powerful power suppliers have already been tangibly more expensive, if you don’t take into account frankly unknown Chinese counterfeits. And power supplies up to 750W are sold equally without inadequate increasing of their price tag.

Very often games show low FPS just because of a HDD, so if you don’t have enough money, take SSD, even though a little one, only 256 Gb like I have done, but this is quite enough for the windows, the software for work and games. Now I have limited with one SSD, as a result I got less rubbish, which earlier I felt a little bit sorry to throw away.

    As the SSD technology is very modern, here it’s just worth buying something of a Brand, so that not to run up against problematic product. So I have chosen OCZ Vertex 4, rather tested model, which has shown itself perfectly in testing at many high-tech portals.

    The motherboard I have also chosen to be branded one, just because I used to have a negative experience with cheap motherboards, when they start to work bad it’s difficult to find the reason, you waste time and nerves, and maybe money, if to change a half of other hardware, as I did, came to your mind. That’s why you’d better not risk and buy something of a Brand, I have chosen the Asus variant, one of the middle priced category, the main point you will have to look at is that the chipset which the board works on is a fresh one, and there is usually no need for any frills to be there. For a civil usage the motherboard from the middle priced category will be suitable, the extreme gamers need top-class boards for overclocking, and we would just do without, saving money at the same time. We shall begin the construction process of our computer. We install the mainboard into a flat surface, not too rigid; it is desirable to put it at a box from the mainboard itself that is you shouldn’t put it at a concrete window-sill, as there are contacts on the back side which will easily bend.

    This is our socket on the mainboard, it is closed with a safety cover, and in other words this is the socket where the processor must be installed. It is shown on the safety cover of the socket how to pull off the cover and how than to fix the processor, on various motherboards this mechanism is realized differently, so there is no sense describing my version, but as a rule everything is very easy, you press onto a little lever and take it out of the notch, lift the lever and release the cover, remove it.

    Now the computer’s body needs to be prepared, for that you need to twist off the fastening bolts of the mainboard from the body if they are twirled in, I had just such variant.

This is such a decorative computer panel, which is propped in back side of the body and serves as indicators for connectors on a motherboard. It’s impossible to make mistakes in installation, merely put it into the notch and that’s all.

    After this we setup the power supply, it may be propped in different bodies into different places. In my case it is propped in the low part of the body. Further we have to install the mainboard; you need to place it the way that all the ports would combine with decorative lath, which was being propped in the previous step, this will give you understanding how generally you should place the mainboard in the body, you need to do all this in the laid on the side body. After you have installed the mainboard, you prop it with bolts to the body.

    Don’t forget to turn on the feeding for processor, I for example forgot and for couple of hours I couldn’t understand what actually the point was. Where the connector for the processor is located, look in the user guide to your mainboard.

    This is strictly speaking a feeding cable of the mainboard, propped into the power supply, as you see it’s difficult to make a mistake here, you just won’t turn it on into other connector, it won’t be suitable.

    Don’t forget to attach the feeding to the USB connectors, and for USB 2.0 and USB 3.0 the feeding sockets are likely to be separate, all this is also indicated in your user guide for the mainboard. On the right of this photo you see the gray connector, different little things like a loud speaker in the body and various LEDs and indicators are propped into it.

    We install our SSD into the corresponding 2.5 inched socket and prop it. It may happen that your body will only have 3.5 inched sockets, in such case make sure that the body has 2.5 inched adapters in a complete set or there must be a 3.5 inched adapter with the SSD itself, or you will have to buy an adapter alone, otherwise you can’t fasten your little 2.5 inched hard disk drive in the big socket. I had fortune – I had 2.5 inched socket. Attach the SSD to the mainboard and to the power supply following instructions that is with the disk.

    After that we plug the feeding in the mainboard with a power supply cable, don’t be afraid to make mistake, you just won’t be able to thrust in the cable to the wrong socket, it won’t go in. In the user guide to your mainboard the place where the power connector for attachment of feeding is shown, so it makes no sense to give some pieces of advice.

    I took a close-up of the processor’s cooler attaching connector, there is the same connector next to it, any other coolers are also connected to them, and at my case I have decided to buy once more couple coolers of the body, so that air would be better driven away inside the body, these are the coolers attached to just the same connectors as processor’s cooler.

    In my computer body latch tabs like these were provided, the majority of modern bodies have the same, if you will be installing HDD, than it’s convenient to use these latches, there is no need to bolt it.

Your graphic card will most likely require 2 connections to the power, namely duplicating each other, one power connection capacity is not already enough. And don’t be afraid that you will make a mistake and put the video or audio card in the wrong socket, this is merely impossible, it won’t go into another connector.     Now we are connecting hinged body coolers, if you have decided to install them, they are very cheap, so I don’t recommend saving money on them. They are installed very simply – on the self tapping screws, which go in a complete set. All similar coolers have identical format and they will certainly be suitable to you body, at least couple of free places for such coolers has almost any computer body.

    Essentially you should prop these coolers in the inner side and determine where air should come in and from where it should come out in your concrete body in advance, because variants may be different. And the cooler has to be propped correctly; otherwise it will vice versa create resistance with incorrect air flow supply and will reduce efficiency of cooling. After the installations attach the cooler to the power and check whether it blows in a right direction.

    Now install RAM laths. If you only have 2, you shall put them in the sockets of one color, this is important, otherwise they won’t work in the dual mode.

    There is an important moment during connecting of power to the disks and other devices – the cables which are included to the complete set with the power supply have several branches. It means that with the help of one cable one can connect several devices, you just see several plugs coming from one cable on the photo, they merely need to be unlocked and you can use them as intended.

    The last moment – safely prop with the bolts all the devices, the graphic card, audio card, network card and so on. There are always more bolts than needed in a complete set with the mainboard, so you will surely get enough. After you have finished it’s necessary to put the side cover of the body back on its place and you can connect the keyboard, mouse, display and other devices to the computer. And now you may turn on the computer and do the installation of the operating system.

Warnings

  • Before the beginning of your work on construction don’t forget to be grounded by touching the metal heat radiator for example, this is needed so that static electricity won’t find itself for any hardware, for instance RAM is very easy to be damaged by a static electricity.
  • The whole process took me about 2 hours. Another couple of hours were spent on the installation of Windows and all necessary office and working programs. Altogether for half a day of work at a weekend I have constructed and set up the computer, saving very big money, which store would take from you while buying of a ready computer. I don’t possess deep technical skills and I am not a specialist and I have constructed computer the third time of my life, so I almost don’t have differences from an ordinary user without experience. That is why the time indicated for construction is rather real. And the specialist will construct everything for 15 minutes and besides for half an hour he’ll set up all the software.
