How to make herring under a fur coat salad
There are several varieties of the traditional russian recipe salad “Herring under a fur coat”. There maybe some ingredients that were changed and added but it is mandatory to use herring and beet for this salad.
- 1 herring
- 1 onion
- 3-4 potatoes
- 2 eggs
- 2 carrot
- 1 large beetroot
Prepare the ingredients. Clean herring, remove any fish bones or you can just buy “ready to use” herring fillet.
Cut fish fillet into cubes.
Clean and dice onions.
Onion may taste bitter, to improve its taste you can soak it in boiling water for 5 minutes, then pour out the hot water and replace it with cold water. You may also pickle onion in vinegar to improve taste.
Now proceed to prepare the salad. The first layer is made of potatoes. You have to use a grater to make the potato smaller and finer. Don’t touch it with fingers or spoon after crumble.
Use mayonnaise to create a grid over the grated potato layer.
Put the onions and chopped herring over the potato and mayonnaise.
Onion and herring layer covered with another grid of mayonnaise. Don’t try to push or touch salad, otherwise it will loose it’s shape.
After the onion and herring layer, place the shredded eggs.
Top the egg layer with another mayonnaise grid.
Top previous layer with cooked grated carrots.
Cover the carrot layer with mayonnaise.
The final ingredient would be beets, place a generous layer over the top of the salad. It will give a nice sweetness and juiciness in contrast with the salted herring.
The final layer, another mayonnaise lattice. You can choose to decorate with other colorful ingredients.
- Herring under a fur coat must be allowed to settle in the refrigerator, remove from the fridge just before serving and pre-warm.
- You can make a lighter version of this recipe by removing eggs and potatoes, but instead of each layer add mayonnaise and beets. Bon Appetit!
