How to make a toy cat-pompon out of wool yarn
- Wool threads
- Cardboard
- Scissors
- Pieces of nylon stockings
- Padding polyester or cotton
-
On top of children’s hats, pompons are used as decorations. Pompons are round, fluffy balls. We’ll try to made a kitten from such a soft and round pompom. There are two threads of yarn which color is the best for a kitten. To make a ball of yarn, use two cardboard circles with a diameter of 3.54 inches or 9 cm (dimensions are for this toy, you can change it proportional on your own to make bigger toy.). Draw a smaller circles inside of these cardboard circles with a diameter of 1.57 inches (4 cm). Cut out the inner circle, made the cut on the part of the radius.
-
Connect the gray and white threads into one. You will need a thick strand of thread that contains 8 pieces of thread. Wind off 78 inches (2 m) of thread, bend, do not cut, wind off again 78 inches (2 m), focusing on the first thread, and repeat several times.
-
Circles must impose on one another. Aim to cut radii apart. Take a strand of yarn and start winding it in the ring, holding the initial tip.
-
The more threads are wound on the ring, the more magnificent will be the result of the pompom. Now you need to cut the strings correctly.
-
Cut neatly using your scissors, it’s better to use small scissors. The incision must run along the circumference.
-
Reference cutting direction - the gap between the rings. The important thing is to do everything carefully, so you will not move the ring or sliced threads.
-
To prevent the threads from scattering, they need to be carefully knotted. Take the thread in two additions (about 6-8 inches or 15-20 cm), slip it between the cardboard rings and tighten it firmly using double knot.
-
Now you can remove the cardboard ring, these have done their job. But it is necessary to save them, because they may be useful for the creation of other pompom projects. Shake the ball after the threads have been cut, this will create the perfect shape for the cat figure and straighten threads. Ugly protruding threads should be cut off, so as not to affect the overall look. Do not cut the thread, which is tying the entire figure up. This is the future tail.
-
Begin to create individual parts, without which the image of a kitten will be incomplete. You will need old nylon pantyhose that are skin colored to make face, ears and paws. Cut 5 square spieces from pantyhose. Laces may be strips that are cut from the same nylon.
-
Put a piece of cotton or parka in each of 5 squares, this will add volume details. Pick the ends of the fabric into a beam and tie a knot on top with a nylon strip.
-
Repeat previous step 4 times: you need two front and two rear legs.
-
Muzzle is created using similar steps in creating the legs. The beam does not collect all the tips, but only the corners, it will allow you to squash parts in the middle waist. Paws and muzzle may be secured with the use of glue. Important guidance to properly attach a muzzle: the thread used to tie the body pompom is on the back of the ball.
-
Cut out a couple of triangles for ears using cardboard and cover them with nylon fabric. The base parts must be lavishly oiled with glue, then slightly move apart threads and paste the ears to secure all the parts of the cat together.
-
Thread, which is used to tie the pompom will be the basis of the tail. Place gray striped nylon thread, plait braid. Tie a bow at the end, cut off the excess thread.
-
Glue a red rag muzzle that looks like the cat’s mouth. Cut blanks for the eyes from colored cardboard, and use black and white paint to make pupils.
- You can play with colors by combining colorful yarn for pompoms, or by using a contrasting color to make the muzzle and paws.
