How to protect children from sweet
Almost all children love sweets, from chocolates, biscuits, waffles to any other sweet goodies. You can find sugar in almost all kinds of sweet foods. Unfortunately, sweets can dangerously affect the health of your child. Sweets are harmful not only because of the glucose content but also the various food additives that come with this kind of food. Food additives and preservatives may cause allergies and skin irritation. Your child’s teeth are also affected by eating sweets as well as the possibility of gaining excess body weight.

- The most important thing to remember is that banning sweets will never solve your child’s liking to sweets. Someone other than you could possibly offer your child candy when you are not around. It is therefore important to educate your child about proper diet as early as you can. Tell to adults in your family that providing candy as a reward for a good deed or to stop a child crying is not helping him at all. It is not a good idea too to prohibit a child to eat candy. This leads to deprivation in a child and intensify the problem.
- Try to prevent candy consumption at all before your child grow up 3 years old. A small child doesn’t need a candy at this age. Toddlers may even grow without developing a taste of candy. Instead he may develop a sweet, salty or sour taste due to other foods that he is accustomed to eat.
- Avoid adding sugar to your child’s food like baby food or vegetable puree. Adding sugar will only accustom your child to eat sweets during the first months of his life.
- Give your child a proper view, avoid eating a candy, especially when a child is looking at you.
- You can also make sweet treats on your own like casseroles and sweet fruit pudding. This better than buying commercially ready made sweets since you can control the amount of sugar in a recipe and avoid placing dyes and additives in your child’s food.
- Avoid giving your child soda. Do you know that a small Pepsi contains 1.5 oz (41 grams) of sugar per serving which is equivalent to 7 tsp of sugar! Do not be attracted to colorful labels and popular soda brand names.
- Be careful too when buying biscuits for your child. Commercials that your child sees on television strongly affect the mind of your child. He may immediately want to particular biscuit brand which is very sweet and may have additives, dyes, sweeteners, flavors, etc. Be sure to read labels and be cautious about these foods.
- Don’t buy bright color sweets with strong scent, it has a lot of harmful ingredients for sure.
- When your child seems to be very addicted to sweets, you may introduce less damaging forms of sweet foods like marshmallows, candied fruits, marmalade and so on. You may also treat your child to other sweet but healthy alternatives like candied dried fruits, nuts, honey and fruit. Introduce these foods one at a time; gradually replace the bowl of candy that he is used to see at the kitchen table with jam and fruits. Remember to praise your child every time he eats healthy sweets instead of craving for candy.
- Family and friends who give gifts to your kids should also be educated to avoid bringing candy; they can bring toys or books as a gift instead. You yourself must also avoid hiding sweets and creating secret sweet stashes in the house. Your child will find this out in time.
- If your child really craves for candy then give him 2 to 3 pieces of small candies instead of a large bar or a large wrapper. This rule is applicable for all kinds of sweets.
- Fruits, nuts and honey however may lead to strong allergies, so make sure that your child is not allergic to these foods before eating them.
- Juices are also rich in sugars so read juice labels first before buying them. Concentrated juice drinks often contain too much sugar and no other benefits to your child’s nutrition. Do not buy this kind of food for your child.
