  • Scissors
  • Glue

Steps

We need 5 squares to build our Christmas tree: black square size of 6×6 inches (15×15 cm) to create a trunk and 4 green squares of different sizes: 7.8×7.8 inches (20×20 cm), 6×6 inches (15×15 cm), 4×4 inches (10×10 cm) to create a branches, and the smallest square for the top of the Christmas tree, the size of 2.8×2.8 (7×7 cm). Height of the finished tree – 6.3 inches (16 cm).

First we’ll create a unit for branches. Bend square twice in a “mountain” form. Let’s get clear with terms first. Camber fold in origami is called “mountain” and indicated by a dot-dash line. Concave fold is called “Valley” and indicated by a dash line.

Double bend square paper diagonally using “valleys”.

All corners are bring together to the center of the square.

    Open your folded figure.

over the paper. The next phase is a markup our sheet with a series of short folds.

Bend and unbend sidebands of the square alternately as shown on scheme. Don’t forget to press the folds to get a strong fold lines.

Turn over the paper. Now you need to markup paper with another series of bends on all of 4 corners of the sheet.

Each of these lines are “valleys”. One line is a bisector for the corresponding corner.

  • how to fold paper origami Christmas tree

Compare your outcome with the picture in this step. All new folds border paper with the clean zigzag lines.

  • how to fold paper origami Christmas tree

We’ve made two pairs of folds in the step 3, remember them by looking at the picture in step 12.

  • how to fold paper origami Christmas tree

Folds made in the previous step allow us to put a single square into a double. Bend one half of the sheet diagonals and at the same time camber lines which divide paper into 4 squares.

  • 14

Put your double square on the plane with the open side down.

  • how to fold paper origami Christmas tree

Bend a top corner of the figure as shown. This will be needed later to connect units between. Don’t forget to push the fold line to make it strong.

  • how to fold paper origami Christmas tree

Completely unfold the paper. You must see the square in the center of sheet, this is the square we made out in the previous step.

  • 17

Fold the sides of the square to turn sheet into “mountain” (as on picture). Concave the center of the square inside. Diagonals of the square are folded as “valleys”, another couple of bends are the “mountains”. In the previous step you can look at scheme of lines which were realized in this step.

Tuck is ready, you can re-fold a sheet in a double square again. Compare the results with a picture.

  • how to fold paper origami Christmas tree

Tuck isn’t visible from the side of sheet. It looks like cut corner of square paper.

  • how to fold paper origami Christmas tree

Lift the bottom corner up. Since you have already outlined the folds, you simply fold the top layer of paper.

  • how to fold paper origami Christmas tree

Turn layer of the paper to the left and look at the next side.

  • how to fold paper origami Christmas tree

Lift the bottom corner up again.

  • how to fold paper origami Christmas tree

Now bend all remaining corners as in steps 21-22 and you’ll get a triangle in the end. Compare your triangle’s base with the picture in this step.

  • how to fold paper origami Christmas tree

When we look at the plane outcome, it’s just a multi-layered triangle.

  • how to fold paper origami Christmas tree

Let’s work with the top part of our triangle. Camber it’s center vertical line and concave side lines (marked up with a dash-line in the previous step).

  • how to fold paper origami Christmas tree

Turn the layer of the paper to the left (close the tuck you’ve done and open the following triangle “page” of our sheet).

  • how to fold paper origami Christmas tree

So, open the workpiece on the next triangle.

  • how to fold paper origami Christmas tree

Repeat steps 25-26 and compare the result with this picture (it’s a top view). The next stage of work is assembling the bottom row of fir branches.

  • how to fold paper origami Christmas tree

Make the last bends on this unit to readiness.

  • 30

The tier unit is ready. You need to make 3 such a tiers of different sizes as we talked in step 1.

  • 31

The next stage of work is assembling the upper crown of the origami Christmas tree. Markup the smallest square with the “mountains”.

  • how to fold paper origami Christmas tree

Markup the same square twice with diagonal “valleys”.

  • how to fold paper origami Christmas tree

Assemble double triangle following these fold lines.

  • how to fold paper origami Christmas tree

    Put an open corner downward.

  • how to fold paper origami Christmas tree

Now lift one side of the figure.

  • how to fold paper origami Christmas tree

And squash it down into a quadrangle form.

  • how to fold paper origami Christmas tree

Turn a squashed quadrangle to the left and lift up the next double layer of paper.

  • how to fold paper origami Christmas tree

And squash it down again as in 36 step.

  • how to fold paper origami Christmas tree

Do the same with the remaining two layers. Compare your outcome with this picture.

  • how to fold paper origami Christmas tree

Now you have to glue corners inside to make strong unit.

Fitting the units is quite easy: insert the bottom part of a tree’s crown into a tuck of the tier unit which was done in previous steps.

  • how to fold paper origami Christmas tree

The last stage of work is about to create the trunk of a Christmas tree.

  • how to fold paper origami Christmas tree

Repeat steps 31-40 (creating the crown unit). Next, we are working with the “clean” sides of the figure (Picture 45.2), its’ bottom corners will be inflected inside.

  • how to fold paper origami Christmas tree

    Look inside the workpiece.

  • how to fold paper origami Christmas tree

Bend the bottom corner, pressing the left tuck.

  • how to fold paper origami Christmas tree

Do the same with the next corner.

  • how to fold paper origami Christmas tree

Repeat with all the remaining corners. Make sure all the corners are bent.

  • how to fold paper origami Christmas tree

We put the trunk on the table.

  • how to fold paper origami Christmas tree

Trunk is ready to take on all the paper sections of the four green modules.

  • how to fold paper origami Christmas tree

    Christmas tree is ready now.

Warnings

  • It will be much easier to work if you remember the basic curves like “Valleys” and “Mountains”.
  • The whole tree will be higher and more stable if the units are glued on its joints.

I love all kinds of Christmas ornaments! I glued a sparkly string to its head and sued it as a Christmas ornament. I thought of using it as a family craft but I think it is a bit hard for kids.
